When choosing replacement window cleaning rubbers, we are often asked what the difference is between hard and soft rubbers and, indeed, which is 'best'. The key to successful smear-free results depends on a perfect seal between the glass and the rubber itself, and each rubber has it's own charachteristics.The softer and more supple a rubber is, the easier it will be to create this perfect seal. However, once a rubber has been 'nicked' or torn it becomes useless and needs to be replaced to avoid streaks. The harder the rubber is, the more durable and resistant to damage it becomes, but the harder it is to use - especially in cold weather as it stiffens up. Choosing a hard or soft rubber then becomes a trade-off between the ease of use of a soft compound and the economy of the longer lasting hard rubber. Often, professional window cleaners use both but, ultimately, it comes down to personal preference.
